And no hangman’s noose will keep Ruark from the bride— and ecstasy—that he craves.Book Shanna Review :
Shanna has to be my all time favorite book so far.... It's the story about a girl who lives on an island with her father a trading merchant. He is very good at what he does as Shanna lives a privelidged life. When her father decides he is getting older and wants to see her married and him grandchildren before he dies, he gives her one year to find a husband of her choosing or else he will choose. Frantic that her efforts to find a man in a year who isn't a fop drives Shanna to take desperate measures. Shanna tries to outsmart the fox by going to the London Goal and choosing a man bound for the gallows to marry. Thus she can return to her island and plead a widow and go on with her life as usual. She chooses Ruark Deverell Beauchamp, a young man accused of murdering a tavern girl found dead in his bed and sentenced to hang. A murder he has no memory of. And now fortune has smiled on him when a beautiful young woman comes to see him in his cell wanting his name. Wanting to marry him and in exchange, she will make his last days more comfortable by providing good food, warm blankets and clean clothes. Besides, he will soon have no need of his good name. but she will. Shanna only has one promise to fulfill, she agreed to Raurk's request that for the gift of his good name in marriage that he would be allowed one night with the beautiful Shanna in hopes that she would carry his heir. Shanna quickly makes the promise, one she has no intention of keeping. Once again the spoiled Shanna gets what she wants and her father is none the wiser. Shanna wastes no time in demanding to leave for the island on the next ship of her fathers to sail. But life rarely goes as planned and the man she chose in the goal is young handsome and fit. Fate intervenes for Ruark Beauchamp once again and he finds himself on the same ship that Shanna has boarded to sail back to the island. Thus begins the often hilarious and sensuous assault on the hauty Shanna Trahern by non-other than her husband - who is intent that she honor her bargain! Woodweis has woven intricate story full of warm rich characters and has melded them into a powerful love story full of humor and sensuality. A wonderful tale of a young girl maturing into a caring beautiful woman, of the man who steadfastly loves her and a father that only wants to see her happy. I've probably read this book at least 10 times since it's release! I never tired of Ms. Woodiwiss and her her awesome historical romance creativity. I started with the Flame and the Flower, and then moved on to The Wolf and the Dove, and Shanna is her third masterpiece, and I think it's my favorite. Shanna was a strong-willed woman, a bit ahead of her time it seems. But the beauty of this story is Ruark and how he understood her and her motivations and used them both to his advantage. No domineering man here, but a strong one nonetheless!
