Sex. Lots of sex. Lots and lots of sex. First of all, I don’t like explicate sex in my gay novels; I think it is a cop-out by the author. In fact, I don’t even read it. I’m gay, but when I come to explicate sex scenes in gay novels, I skim over them. I think I skimmed over almost a third of this novel.If I want sex scenes, I will search out something labeled ‘erotic fiction’ or ‘pornography’. I’ll admit, it’s not just this author, but many authors are writing straightforward gay fiction which should be labeled ‘erotic’, and I think they are being deceitful by not doing so.I also fault the reviewers who do not mention that the story has an overabundance of explicate sex.The two protagonists are well developed and generally likeable and the story is interesting, but I wonder why Christopher is so insecure since he is an entertainer and performs on stage all the time.If you like plenty of sex in your stories, you will like this story. This was probably the best gay love story I've ever read. Not necessarily the best "gay" book, but love story or gay romance. The characters were more than the usually 2 dimensional comic book variety one often encounters in a gay romance. More-so, the supporting characters were believable and added greatly to the overall plot. Jesse, one of the main gay characters, is independently wealthy haven been bought out of the family food business primarily bc he's gay. Can't have a gay man eventually running a national southern business. He keeps busy as the owner a jewelry store in Gatlinburg, creating custom hand made pieces. Enter Christopher the other main gay character who's looking to have a locket made for his grandma, the only member of his family that's always supported him and loved him regardless of his sexuality. Chris goes to see Jesse to discuss the lockets design. Sparks begin right away as the chemistry between them is electric. Jesse recognizes Chris as he's seen him perform at a local Theme Park which for all intents and purposes is Dollywood. This made the book jump off the pages as I worked for 8 years at Six Flags Great America. In the background, yet to be found out by Chris is Jesse's wife (is he bi or gay?). She was involved in a car accident, brain dead and on life support. Two children are introduced that become critical to the overall plot, a young son and a slightly older daughter who has an obsession that by hand making 2,000 origami cranes that she can "wish" her mom back to life. Both young men have sisters/mother/fathers and in Chris' case a stepfather that's a bible thumping super conservative preacher who has rejected his stepson. Friends and past lovers make for an interesting situation. What surprised me was the way in which the author handled the unhealthy obsession of Jesse's daughter, how Jesse handles Chris' family situation and the way in which Christopher met Jesse's comatose wife and then Jesse's reaction to that at chance meeting. The time of year also pulls on one's heartstrings as the real meat of the book takes place in the fall/Thanksgiving and then Christmas. I should also point out that the sex scenes were extremely hot and well done. I've found that female authors are less realistic in the writing of sexual scenes but Leta Blake certainly does justice to them. All in all it got me horny in places and, being emotional taken with the characters, made me tear up in several places. This book is a winner in the gay romance category.
